Pre Season Round Up

Another pre season under our belts and a chance to blow the cobwebs off, with the successful campaign ĺast season our pre season incorporates both the Italian Supercoppa and European Super Cup games so we had 6 matches to get ourselves ready for both Final’s which are back to back before our final pre season game against Real Madrid. I always try to get good game time for the whole squad and also look to make any tweaks to the system. To be honest I did not set out to make any tweaks however due to a few injuries and match fitness I found myself trying out a couple of tweaks to our 4-3-3 formation, usually the front 3 are made up of a complete forward and two inside forwards but I used a complete forward, a shadow striker and a central attacking midfielder. The formation now resembles a Xmas tree. So with the new formation in place we put it in to practice for our first game which was away at Swiss side Étoile Carouge FC, a game which  we won at a canter 6-0 whilst giving starts to a number of Under 20’s players with a few 1st team squad players involved. Assane Knoukouri grabbed himself a hat-trick playing in the box to box role in the centre owhich f our midfield, Andrea Pinamonti netted a brace and Federico Dimarco got himself a goal. The narrower formation seemed to work nicely allowing both full backs to create the width but a tougher test against stronger opposition is required. Up next we entertained FC Porto at the Giuseppe Meazza and we ran out 5-0 winners with Luciano Vietto grabbing an hat-trick playing in the shadow striker role behind Pinamonti. I kept the same combination for our next game away at Vitesse which we raced in to a 3-0 lead before the break with both Pinamonti 2 and Vietto getting the goals. At half time I made sweeping changes giving the Under 20’s lads a run out which went well despite conceding 2 late goals. Sheffield Wednesday were our hosts for our next game which I gave starts to our 2 new signings Thomas Lemar and Matheus Pereira, Morata played up top with Lemar playing in the shadow striker role and Pereira in the attacking midfield position. Both newcomers got on the scoresheet with Morata in a 3-0 win. I reverted back to our 4-3-3 with inside forwards for the trip to Holland which produced a 7-0 win over FC Groningen which produced 4 goals for Vietto and a hat-trick for Andrija Zivkovic. The last warm up game before the Supercoppa and European Super Cup Finals was at A.C Lumezzane which gave me the opportunity to give a run out to a both Jovetic and Laporte who were recovering from injuries. We won the game 3-0 with goals from Laporte, Morata and Pereira. Juventus and Valencia next which you can read about below before we finished pre season with a home game against Real Madrid which we won 3-1 courtesy of goals by Thiago 2 and Jovetic.

Transfer News

I purchased 2 players in the window 24 year old French Attacking Midfielder Thomas Lemar £28.5m from AS Monaco, and 21 year old Brazilian  Attacking Midfielder Matheus Pereira £17.5m from Corinthians. Both players can play in a number of roles which gives us a good selection of attacking options.

The biggest name leaving the club was Croatian International Ivan Perisic who as joined Leicester City after his desire to play more matches left me with the decision to allow the 30 year old to move on and hopefully adapt to life in England.

Season Expectations

The board have expressed their expectations and it comes as no surprise that they expect us to win the title again whilst reaching the semi finals of the Champions League.

Supercoppa Italia

A two minute salvo in the second half from Thiago (74th) and John Stones (76th) gave us a 2-0 win against our big rival’s Juventus. It’s always nice to add a piece of silverware to the trophy room after a win against your rivals. Juventus have had the edge on us in the last few games against each other so the victory was all the more sweeter.

European Super Cup

A trip to England for the European Super Cup Final at Southampton’s St.Marys against Valencia.  It was a night to remember for both our Full Backs Yuto Nagatomo and Alex Telles who both scored our goals in a 2-0 win against the Europa League Winners. Telles got his goal in the first half with captain Nagatomo capping a man of the match performance with his goal in the second period.

Serie A

We have reached the winter break 7 points a drift of leaders Juventus with 2 games in hand due to our commitments in Mexico for the World Club Championship. We have lost 3 games has we struggled a little in juggling the squad a little with our Champions League campaign but that’s no excuse we have lost fair and square away from home to 2nd placed Sampdoria 0-2, leaders Juventus 0-1 and Milan 0-3 along with 2 goalless draws at home against Palermo and Cagliari. Luciano Vietto has scored 10 goals for us in the league with Domenico Berardi scoring 9 with 5 of them coming against Chievo in a 6-0 win. We need to pull our socks up in the league if we are to retain our title. Special mention for Parma who are back in the top flight.

We started the campaign off with a 1-0 win in Milano against Real Madrid with Alvaro Morata haunting them yet again with our goal. Celtic were our hosts and Celtic Park was silenced in the first period of the game with us going in at the break 4-0 up with goals from Morata 2, Zivkovic and a Armstrong own goal. We went in to the away game with AS Monaco full of confidence and came away with our biggest defeat since I have been at the club with the team from Ligue 1 hammering us 5-1 with Pereira getting our goal. We got the chance to get revenge in the following game as Monaco visited us for the turn around fixture. Again they were a threat but this time we looked strong at the back with the game ending all square at 0-0. A visit to the Santiago Bernabeu for our game against Real Madrid produced a six goal thriller with us taking the spoils 4-2 with Vietto 2 and Neves scoring our goals and an own goal by Ricardo Rodriguez. Last game in the group was at home to Celtic which we won 3-1 to top the group with goals coming from Pereira, Stones and Berardi. The Knockout round draw paired us with Atlético Madrid who we played in last year’s Semi Final, we know this will be a difficult tie and will have to be at our best over the 2 legs if we want to advance any further in the competition.

World Club Championship (Mexico 2019)

We travelled to Mexico for the World Club Championship and played Club America the Mexican club in front of 91,653 supporters for the Semi Final tie which we won with ease. Alvaro Morata capped a fine display by netting a hat-trick in the 5-1 win. Unfortunately the Mexican side did not help themselves with 2 own goals.

Final

95,000 packed in to the Azteca to see us play Brazilian club Corinthians for the right to be called World Club Champions. I told the boys to go and win it for the fans and the wasted no time has we ran in to a 3-0 lead via Berardi, Vietto and Gnoukouri in the first 15 minutes. The Brazilians were left bewildered as we pressed for more but they held out until the break. After the break Corinthians had a few long range efforts before they gifted us with an own goal that knocked the stuffing out of them. Vietto added a 2nd before a late consolation goal from the Brazilians, 5-1 and we were crowned World Club Champions picking up our third piece of silverware of the season so far.

A great start to our season with us delivering the 12th trophy of my reign at the club which is in its fifth year. After the winter break we need to improve our league form to try and go for our third title in succession and overturn the lead Juve have at the top. We also have a tough Champions League game coming up against Atlético Madrid. The transfer window as just opened and Manchester City have unsettled goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegan after they put a derisory offer in for him. After I turned it down Ter Stegan came knocking about how he was disappointed that I had rejected the offer because he wanted to join a big club. Well I have told him he can go if they match my value of him. I think it will be an interesting window as interest in a few of our players is high. Thanks for reading and hope you will be back soon to see how our season pans out. Arriverderchi

Champions League Results

We kicked the new year off with a 1-1 draw in Glasgow against Celtic with Morata getting the away goal. The return leg in our own back yard was a game too far for the Scottish Champions with our front 3 of Morata, Vietto and Berardi all getting on the scoresheet in a 3-0 win. The Quarter Final draw paired us with Real Madrid with the first leg in Milano. We produced a first half of attacking football that had us 4-0 up at half time with goals from Morata 2, Neves and Berardi. Real got one back in the second half to leave that thought in my head about the away goal but a 4-1 win I was happy. The trip to Madrid was put to bed early doors with Morata scoring a 5th minute goal to haunt the Madrid faithful. The ex Real player then assisted Berardi to put us 2 up just before the break. A Madrid consolation goal in the 2nd half briefly spurred on the Spanish side who were without both Ronaldo and Bale who are both plying their trade in Paris but the tie was over a 2-1 win and a Semi Final place booked it was off to Zurich for the Semi Final draw. We were first out the hat shortly followed by Atlético Madrid, so off to Spain and Madrid again but this time against Simeone’s Atlético. The first leg in Spain was a nervy but end to end game with both sides giving their all. We went 1 up thanks to an own goal by Nélson Semedo after 19 minutes however 10 minutes later we are 2-1 down. We played to the whistle and with the last kick of the half Domenico Berardi levels for us and makes my half time team talk a little easier. I encourage the boys and send them out motivated. The second half was frantic and Antoine Griezmann puts our hosts 3-2 up with 10 minutes to play. We press but to no avail until a long vertical ball from Neves finds Zivkovic on the edge of the area he cuts inside and shoots Gooooooaaaaal, you beauty ,get in 3-3 in the 92nd minute and a fist pump at 01:40 am I go to bed happy dreaming about Verticalità again….I get sadder has I get older I am dreaming about a 3D man named Zivkovic scoring a goal ( it was a beautiful pass though). On to the 2nd leg and another 5 star performance from my team a 3-0 win , Morata again plus one each from Jovetic and Stones puts in to the Final in Seville against PSG. (see below for the Final)

I am so pleased we retained the title, we managed to keep Juventus at arms length despite only winning 1 game in a 7 game sequence starting in April as the toll of competing in the Champions League was tricky. I had thrown everything at the Champions League which impacted on our league form but we managed four 1-1 draws in the 7 game run which kept us ticking over before winning our final 2 league games against Udinese and Atalanta. Squad Statistics

Morata 39 goals, Berardi 19 goals, Vietto 18 goals and Jovetic 13 goals provided the fire power that delivered the treble however we got a good return from the midfield to support the front line. No prizes for guessing our leading average rating which was 8.20 from player of the season again Yuto Nagatomo   ( A super professional player who will go down as one of my all time FM players).

So the curtain as come down on my 4th season in charge at Inter with a Champions League Title. The season has seen us stamp our style both home and abroad with the system that I have worked with and stuck by from day 1 which gives me a thirst for more in a week that FM17 release date was revealed. I have an idea in my mind for a tactical tweak that I will work on during pre season has I prepare the Champions of Europe for another long season that will see me take the club to the World Club Championship which will be a first for me since I took AC Milan to play Boca Juniors to Tokyo many years ago for the old style 1 off game European Champions v South American Champions, which I preferred but times have changed so I will embrace the new format and hope to make Internazionale World Club Champions. No doubt I will be busy fending off bids for my European Champions in the close season. I can confirm that I have offered and he signed it a 2 year contract to our captain Yuto Nagatomo. I have also offered a contract to Steven Jovetic who will be approaching his last year of his current contract. I have triggered the extension of an extra year for promising left sided wing back Federico Dimarco, Dimarco is the future of the club who managed 20 odd appearances for the first team at an average rating of 8.0 this season. Well I will leave it there for now. Thanks for reading I will be back over the next few days with our  (5.0) Pre Season round up.

Winter Break 2018-2019

We have reached the winter break in a good position 9 points clear of Juventus our closest rivals. Our only defeat in the league was inflicted on us by Juventus in the last game before the winter break in the Juventus stadium by 3 goals to 1.  We have kept 11 clean sheets in our opening 17 games with only Juve scoring more than 1 goal against us. It gives us a solid platform to build our second half of the season on. Alvaro Morata has hit the ground running with 13 league goals. Luciano Vietto has scored 8 goals despite picking up a couple of injuries that as sidelined him. I don’t have any plans of bringing anybody in to the club during the transfer window. Forgive me for the short update but I have got another post waiting to go in the next 24 hours.

Champions League

We started our European adventure with a 2-1 win at home against Marcelo Bielsa’s Chelsea. We trailed 1-0 at the break despite dominating the half and it took until the 74th minute to get back on level terms with an outstanding volley from Morata who I was just about to replace. Just as the game looked like ending in a draw Granit Xhaka hit a last minute winner to sink Chelsea and give us a well deserved 3 points. Next up a tricky game away to Shahktar Donetsk produced another Granit Xhaka winner after just 7 minutes that gave us a hard fought 1-0 win. A double header next against Steaua with the first leg in Bucherest ending in a 5-0 win for us. The game was one way traffic with Alvaro Morata leading the way with a first half hat-trick. Our other 2 goals also came in the first period via Pjaca and Thiago. The 2nd leg was much like the first leg with us winning the game 4-0 and another Morata hat-trick against the Romanians, Gnoukouri got our other goal. Bielsa got his revenge against us in the return game in London, Chelsea won 2-0 and looked like they could have defended all night long without us troubling them. On to our last game in the group were we entertained  our supporters with a convincing 5-1 victory over Shahktar with our goals coming from Laporte, Vietto 2, Berardi and Xhaka. So a very good group stage for us puts us in to the knockout rounds. We have drawn Glasgow Celtic in the first knockout round.

Here we go again, another season is upon us, my fourth with Inter and our first has defending champions. I am always weary in the close system with the vultures hovering to unsettle our players and take them away from our club, and this summer as been no different I have been able to fend off bids for Telles, Berardi, Zivkovic and Neves. Unfortunately though I have lost one of my key players (See Below). Yuto Nagatomo will continue with the captains arm band whist Ruben Neves steps up to vice captain. The board have disclosed their expectations for the coming season and as expected they have raised the bar: they want us to reach the semi final of the Champions League whilst winning Serie A.

Transfers Out

We have had a big loss in Geoffrey Kondogbia who as joined Manchester City for £38m after he requested that I let him talk to them. Whilst I did not want to lose the French Midfielder I did not want to stand in his way if he wanted to leave. Kondogbia has been excellent for us in the last 3 seasons and leaves a big void to fill by one of our talented midfielders already at the club.

IMG_20160814_180149

What happened next in the window was incredible, PSG had made a couple of bids for Martin Odegaard which I turned down, they returned with a third bid so I decided to say that we would accept a bid of £94m thinking they would go away, however they accepted and made a bid for the full amount. So 19 year old Odegaard joined PSG for an incredible amount. I dont remember who it was in the FM Community but they said “welcome to dealing with PSG” Whilst Odegaard is a very talented player the amount of money that PSG are paying I would drive him from Milan to Paris myself.

IMG_20160814_180135

Rodrigo Palacio has retired from the game and left the club at the end of June along with Miranda who has left the club on a free transfer. I have also released a number of youth team players including George Puskas who was not up to the standard to play for us.

Transfers In

We have signed 3 player’s for our first team squad 2 permanent and 1 on a season long loan with a option to buy. 25 year old Forward Alvaro Morata had become surplus to requirements at Manchester City who had transfer listed him for £25m after two seasons at the club were he made less than 10 starts in the league for them.

&NCS_modified=20150614102302&MaxW=640&imageVersion=default&AR-150619560

Next through the door we signed Right Wing Back Achraf Hakimi from Real Madrid for £4.7m, the Moroccan will come in to the club as Yuto Nagatomo’s under study with a view of becoming Nagatomo’s long term replacement.

Achraf+Hakimi+Real+Madrid+CF+v+SL+Benfica+JMTmz8tkJIAl

We then signed Barcelona B Central Midfielder Carles Alena  on a season long loan with a option to buy. Alena is a very technically gifted player who I have been watching for the past 12 months. I now have the chance to see how he fits in to our system over the coming season.

New Affiliate

I am pleased to announce that we have secured a link with Belgian club Anderlecht. I wanted to form a link with a top club from a decent league within Europe so I can send players that come through our development squad who I feel need to get some first team football under their belt before making the final step up in to our first team. Once our pre season is complete 3 players are going to go to Anderlecht on a season long loan, the players are Forward Andrea Pinamonti, Winger Nicola Dalmonte and Left Back Giuseppe Pezzella. Anderlecht have said that all 3 will be part of the first team squad for the forth coming season.

anderlecht

Inter Academy

If you have read my earlier post on the Inter Academy you will be familiar with how I try to develop players through our system, however having created the link with Anderlecht I am now in a position to add another level to our development system. Has many will know I like to keep my squads trimmed down to enable players to get game time has I see no point in having overloaded squads with players not getting any quality game time. So a recap on our development system:

Step 1 Youth Intake: Head Of Youth Development brings players in to the club.

Step 2 Under 18 squad maximum of 25 players : Players will be continually monitored during the season. At the end of the season players will either Remain in the Under 18 squad Transition in to the Under 20 squad Released from the club.

Step 3 Under 20 squad maximum of 25 players : Players will be continually monitored during the season. At the end of the season players will either Remain in the Under 20 squad Transition in to the First Team squad Go on a season long loan to Anderlecht or whoever our leading affiliate club is. (I will always try to set up a club from the top division in either Belgium, Holland or Portugal). Transfer listed or Released from the club.

Whilst I am a believer of developing players at the club I realise that first team experience at another club can bridge the gap of a players transition in to the first team by getting good game time instead of just being a fringe player in the first team squad. This coming season I have sent the 3 players Pinamonti, Pezzella and Dalmonte to Anderlecht and have promoted both Federico Dimarco  (LWB) and Zinho Vanreusden  (CB) in to the first team squad whilst Forward George Puskas has been released from the club. Federico Dimarco will be pushing Alex Telles for a starting place this season he looks a phenomenal player in our system.

Pre-Season Results

We have had a very good pre season winning all our games whilst getting good playing time for the whole squad. We have also introduced a 3-5-2 formation in to our Verticalità set of tactics. The 3-5-2 incorporates a false 9 alongside a complete forward, early signs are promising and if successful gives us another option.

inter pre season res

Supercoppa

We faced Napoli for the Supercoppa Final where we added to our collection of silverware after winning a penalty shoot out after a 1-1 draw. The Final itself was more satisfying to win because we fielded 5 players who have come through the system at Inter. Assane Knoukouri, Andrea Pinamonti, Federico Dimarco, Zinho Vanreusden and Nicola Dalmonte all started the final in which we had Ruben Neves to thank after his superb 73rd minute strike took us in to extra time by cancelling Hakan Calhanoglu’s 48th minute goal out.Man of the match was Nicola Dalmonte who put in a good performance.

Verticalità System Inspired By Marcelo Bielsa #FM16

cropped-14705853442881.jpg

So what is Verticalità ? Verticalità is my tactical system inspired by Marcelo Bielsa, notice that I say inspired because I am not trying to create an exact replica of Bielsa’s tactic. At this point I must also stress that this is no way a plug and play tactic so if that’s what you are looking for its not for you. The post is more about how I use the system. It will come as no surprise that I am an admirer of Argentine  Marcelo Bielsa’s tactics. Verticalità ( Verticality ) in the words of Bielsa is:

“Once we have the ball, we try and find a way of getting forward as quickly as possible, in a vertical direction if you like. But we don’t get frustrated if we can’t get it forward immediately, we aim to be comfortable on the ball, and if it’s not a case of going forward straight away, we keep it.”

Bielsa’s teams play at a high tempo and press aggressively which requires an high level of fitness, they look to play vertically.  Going back to Bielsa’s quote this in a nutshell is how I want my teams to play.

I use two different formations but use the same team instructions for both.

The two full backs create width in the attacking phase which enable both our inside forwards to come in field and support the Complete Forward, My central midfield 3 are made up of a Holder / Runner / Playmaker, this is the engine room. The 2 Central Defenders are both very good in possession of the ball but I only play one of them as a Ball Playing Defender, in front of them is the Half Back who drops in between the centre backs in the defensive phase.

Here you can see we enforce the press and create a defensive block from the overload which cuts off the opposition’s support and passing lanes.

The video below is a short clip from a pre season game, our complete forward Andrea Pinamonti wins the ball back in a deep position and lays it off to advanced playmaker Thiago who plays a pin point vertical pass to our attacking left wing back Federico Dimarcos who finishes the move with a well taken goal.

Xhaka plays the vertical pass to Vietto who has roamed from his central position in to the right inside forward channel, we are now in a counter attacking position which ends with Vietto winning us a corner after making their keeper making a save. From the resulting corner we score and go on to win the game 1-0.

20160515_104423 Like I have said above this is not a plug and play tactic but its my framework that I use to set my system up. I watch a lot of our games in detail and tweak in play. I can use both systems during a game sometimes and change the roles within the system. We average around 60% ball possession. Individual training is an important part of the system. I tend to have a 2 month rotation training individual roles then 2 month training technique for all players. Player Recruitment I always look to recruit technical type players with the midfield positions to also have the following high attributes: Strength, Stamina and Natural Fitness. It’s like stating the obvious but the midfield really is the engine room. I am pretty confident if you watched one of our games in full you would see the Bielsa inspiration in our gameplay, I have spent many hours like many of the community watching and tweaking tactics to find the system that I want to achieve for the teams that I manage. I enjoy every minute of it and will continue the process for many more hours. The community are my inspiration I have made contact with so many like minded individuals who are like my extended family. I have come across so many fantastic different blogs, videos, books and tactical views ect, ect which I value equally. Its nice to come across different views on the game so a big thank you from me to the whole community and long may it continue. I could list everyone but I would not want to miss any individual out so I wont, but if you are reading this I am talking about you.

Verticalità The System Aims

  • Verticality, Positive Football
  • Footballers with Technical Ability
  • Attacking & Defending as a Team
  • Intelligence & Creativity
  • Fluidity & Movement

Thanks for reading this post, I will have our season 4 pre-season post published this coming weekend so until then  Arriverderchi

Rise Of The Nerazzurri (3.3) #FM16 Inter Win The Treble 2017-2018

20160805_081118

The Season is over and we are celebrating winning the treble after we added the Serie A title and Coppa Italia to the European Super Cup. We won the League with a record points total after losing just 1 game all season. We also added two fantastic players to the squad in Thiago Alcantara and Aymeric Laporte I feel these two players will fit in to our philosophy and system. We also let both Gary Medel  (U.S Sassuolo) and Jelson Murillo  (Bayern Munich) leave the club after both struggled for game time. I continued to use our tactical system which is now known as Verticalità  (Verticality) which I will be posting about shortly.

treble

Serie A

title v roma 7-4

U.S Sassuolo (Home) Won 1-0 A good win after the winter break, Steven Jovetic getting the winner after 51 minutes in a game which we dominated from start to finish.

Spezia (Home) Won 2-0 Granit Xhaka got a brace for us in the Meazza has we strengthened our lead at the top of the table.

Pescara (Away) Won 4-3 What a game Pescara ran us all the way but our quality saw us through with Vietto 2, Jovetic and  Berardi getting the goals to deny Pescara after a gutsy performance.

Sampdoria  (Home) Won 3-0 Three second half goals turned our superiority in to three points. Vietto, Odegaard and Neves with three clinical strikes.

Lazio (Away) Drawn 0-0 A rare blank from us has we failed to take our chances against a well organised 3-5-2 which frustrated us from start to finish. Definitely the best performance against us this season.

Fiorentina (Away) Won 2-1 Back to winning ways but we laboured to victory. I was not happy with our performance and let the boys know at both half time and full time. We won the game thanks to an own goal and a Berardi penalty.

Torino (Home) Won 2-1 I shook the team up and brought in 4 players Zivkovic, Perisic, Pjaca and Gnoukouri after our poor performance in Florence. Zivkovic and Jovetic got the goals but it was the superb performance of Kondogbia which stood out. He has been a rock for me in my time here, and there is no wonder Real Madrid are monitoring him.

Empoli (Away) Won 5-1 The Domenico Berardi show with a superb hat-trick accompanied by goals from Kondogbia and Vietto. Berardi has settled well in to the system playing in the role of right inside forward.

Bologna (Home) Won 2-0 We look to have got our game back on track Luciano Vietto with 2 clinical finishes which have opened up a 12 point lead at the top.

Udinese (Away) Won 4-1 Jovetic 2 Berardi and a first goal for us from Aymeric Laporte cemented our place at the top of the table. I am starting to think it’s our year for the title.

Palermo (Home) Won 1-0 A late Jovetic winner does not tell the story of a game in which we had 73% of the ball against a Palermo side suffering from tiredness and an injury crisis.

Napoli (Away)  Won 3-1 A solid performance against 3rd place Napoli. We edged the first period and went in at the break 1 up thanks to a converted penalty from Berardi. We came out for the restart on the front foot but conceded a poor goal after a John Stones mistake.  We regrouped and had in form Jovetic to thank with 2 goals that gave us a win that qualifies us for the Champions League next season.

Genoa (Home) Won 3-0 A first half performance that puts us on the brink of the title, goals from Berardi and Thiago 2 give us a 3-0 win and 3 points off lifting the title.

AS Roma (Away) Won 7-4 Wow what a game see screenshot above Berardi 5 goals and a Alex Telles brace secure the title in a game that had everything.

AC Milan (Home) Won 4-0 What a better way to celebrate winning the title with a 4-0 hammering of Milan in the derby. The highlight of the game for me though was Andrea Pinamonti scoring his first senior goal for the club, this kid looks the real deal and will be in our first team squad next season. Odegaard a brace and Jovetic completed the scoring.

Juventus (Away) Won 2-0 Two second half goals from Berardi against our big rival’s gave us the points in the derby of Italy. We won with ease against a subdued Juventus side. Are we seeing a Juve side who need rebuilding after dominating the league for so many years. I feel Juve will strengthen in the summer has they look to avenge us after this season.

Verona (Home) Won 5-2 Marco Pjaca netted 3 goals along with one each for Berardi and Odegaard has we extend our unbeaten run in the League to 17 games.

Cesena (Away) Won 3-1 A chance to change and tweak a few roles in the system against relegated Cesena. We got the win courtesy of Jovetic,Vietto and Odegaard.

Carpi (Home) Won 3-2 A chance to avenge our only defeat of the season which came at the end of last year. We got the win against a very  spirited Carpi side who played well throughout. Neves,Vietto and Pjaca with our goals.

U.S Sassuolo (Away) Won 4-1 A chance to catch up with Gary Medel who joined Sassuolo in January. Jovetic got 2 early goals to settle us along with a Kondogbia goal which had us 3 up inside 10 minutes. We added one more late on in the 2nd half through Odegaard who is being tracked by Barcelona.

Champions League

So near but yet so far, I was convinced our form would take us to European glory after we dispatched both Real Madrid and Chelsea to set up a Semi Final against Mourinho’s Manchester United however we got rumbled by Mourinho over the 2 legs which left us thinking what might have been. The Final itself was contested by both Manchester teams with Jurgen Klopps City winning 2-1 to make it a hat-trick of English wins in the competition after Arsenal had won it in the past 2 seasons.

Coppa Italia

We lifted the Coppa Italia by beating Napoli 4-2 in the final after extra time. Goals from Odegaard and Thiago got our goals in normal time before both Odegaard and Berardi won us the game in extra time which completed our treble this season.

Squad Statistics

Yuto Nagatomo led the way for a third season on the bounce with the top average rating 8.21 over the season.. Luciano Vietto netted 46 goals, Berardi 25 goals, Jovetic 16 goals and Neves 13 goals. Plenty of goals from our players resulted in us having our best season during my time here.

So we have come to the end of the season a very good season that as seen us complete a treble and get to the Champions League Semi Final. I started the season with hope of the title in Italy because after 2 near misses in seasons 1 and 2 I felt the club needed to make their mark at home. Regular readers of my blog will know that I have now created a system which is known by the name Verticalità which is based on Marcelo Bielsa’s Verticality Philosophy. I now have the system playing how I want to it too by using 2 formations a 4-3-3 and a 2-3-2-2-1. I am writing a post about it and how I implement the system but I must stress this is not a plug and play tactic that will work with any side. I watch a lot of games in full and make changes in game just like Bielsa, switching roles and formations to get the right result. So far it’s worked for me but sometimes it can come a cropper like our Semi Final defeat to Manchester United In the Champions League. It also can produce Bielsa like performances like our 7-4 win to secure the title against Roma. Overall the system works very well in producing the football and results I desire. Thanks for following my blog and the interaction from the FM Community. I will be back soon with a new post so keep your eyes peeled.

Rise Of The Nerazzurri (3.2) #FM16 Winter Break 17-18

inter

I started this season with my main focus being the Serie A title after being runners up to Juventus in the last two seasons I want us to go to the next level and establish ourselves has the number 1 team in Italy. So how did we get on in the first half of the season?

August 2017

Spezia (Away) Won 4-0  The opening game of the season and a very good 4-0 win, we led 3-0 at the break with goals from Kondogbia, Stones (Penalty) and a Parigini own goal. The 2nd half gave me a chance to give Berardi and Xhaka a rest with both carrying slight injuries. Vietto got his 1st league goal for the club to make it a resounding 4-0 win. I used my tried and tested 4-3-3.

Pescara (Home) Won 4-0 First home game of the season and chance to use my new system, Verticalità  based on the philosophy of Marcelo Bielsa. So Pescara were the visitors to the Meazza. We came out the blocks firing with first half goals from Vietto 2, Stones and Perisic. 4-0 at the break and that’s how it ended, I was pleased with the performance and the new system.

September 2017

Sampdoria (Away) Won 4-1 Before the game I decided that we would use our new system for the away trip. We started the game on the front foot and was rewarded in the 2nd minute with a Ruben Neves goal. We looked in control dominating the ball and got a second goal before the break this time Steven Jovetic cutting in from the left side and beating the Sampdoria keeper with a piledriver of a shot 2-0. I told the lads ‘to keep it up in the second half’ and brought Zivkovic on for the injured Berardi. The 54th minute produced a superb team goal Vallejo started the move from the back and 18 passes later Neves fired home for his second and our 3rd. 76minutes we got a penalty, Kondogbia was fouled in the area and Ruben Neves stepped up and put the game beyond Sampdoria with his 3rd 4-0. On 76 minutes I took Jovetic and Xhaka off for Gnoukouri and Pjaca. A very nice victory with the boys getting to grips with our new system.

Lazio (Home) Drawn 2-2 A strange game we led 2-0 after 11 minutes thanks to a brace from Luciano Vietto however after dominating the game we did the unthinkable and somehow squandered our lead and drew the game 2-2. Nagatomo and Telles looked good going forward for the duration of the game.

Fiorentina (Home) Won 2-0 A switch back to our 4-3-3 for the visit of the Viola which produced another brace for Vietto in the first half in the 22nd and 25th minute. This time though we looked solid resulting in our visitors not having a single shot on target.

Torino (Away) Won 4-0 A visit to Turin and a switch back to our new formation produced a solid 4-0 win against a Torino side playing a  3-5-2. Vietto opened the scoring with his 8th goal in 6 games in the 23rd minute, Domenico Berardi got on the scoresheet just 6 minutes later  making my half time team talk easy has I told the boys not to get complacent in the 2nd half. Berardi added a third his second before John Stones put the tie to bed with our fourth. A good 3 points on the road and top spot in the league.

Empoli (Home) Won 6-2 The visit of third placed Empoli was a lot closer than the scoreline suggest’s, we had Yuto Nagatomo sent off in the second half and scored 3 goals in the last 4 minutes. Vietto 2, Berardi, Kondogbia, Neves and Xhaka all netting for us. We end the month on top of the table.

October 2017

Bologna (Away) Won 3-0 We recorded a 3-0 win with 3 first half goals courtesy of Nagatomo, Telles and Vietto who is proving to be a top class signing.

Udinese (Home) Won 2-1 Udinese had the better of the first half and led up until Andrija Zivkovic pulled us back in to the game in the 31st minute. The game looked to be heading for a draw so I decided to go for broke and introduced Berardi and Odegaard to the game and changed to overload, within 5 minutes they combined to create the winning goal with Odegaard playing a pin point pass for Berardi to slot home….booooom get in (we all know that feeling when you make that match winning change).

Palermo (Away) Won 1-0 The Renzo Barbera was the setting for our next game against an in form Palermo side. In an hard fort game it was another late substitution that gave us all 3 points with Steven Jovetic scoring the winner just 3 minutes before time after replacing Vietto. (I am getting used to this bring on Napoli)

Napoli (Home) Won 4-2 Another month ended with us still undefeated in the League with a 4-2 win against one of our title rivals. Goals from Telles, Vietto 2 and Berardi.

November 2017

Genoa (Away) Won 1-0 I wanted to mix things up a bit and decided that we would revert back to our 4-3-3 formation for the visit to Genoa who are pushing for  European qualification. Ivan Perisic returning from injury got the only goal of the game after 17 minutes which we held on too, until the full time whistle.

AS Roma (Home) Won 6-0 Roma visited the Meazza in bad shape they are bottom of the table and manager less.  We took no pity on the Romans. We scored 3 goals in both half’s with no reply. Gnoukouri, Stones and Kondogbia gave us a 3-0 lead at the break. In the 2nd period 3 more goals courtesy of Kondogbia, Nagatomo and Neves rounded the day off for us.

AC Milan (Away) Drawn 1-1 The Milan Derby is always a test and this one was no different. Milan led early on after a Abate goal  in the 5th minute. We kept knocking on the door  with Berardi, Vietto and Perisic all coming close but it was Eric Pulger who scored an own goal after 72 minutes turning the ball in to his own net after a low cross from Nagatomo. We got the point that we deserved against a spirited Milan side who are having a good season.

Juventus (Home) Won 2-0 Probably the most satisfying result of the first half of the season, we went with the 4-3-3 formation and took the game to Juve from the off. We went in at the break goalless so I gave my players a rocket to fire them up and it worked, we created chance after chance in the 2nd half and got our reward in the 72nd minute with a Neves header and again on 78 minutes via a Xhaka strike from 18 yards 2-0 and a vital 3 points against our nemesis.

December 2017

Verona (Away) Won 4-2 Vietto scored a superb hat-trick which paved the way for a another win on the road. John Stones sealed the win in the 89th minute. 3 more points and Juego De Posicion leads the way in Italy.

Cesena (Home) Won 3-0 The Luciano Vietto show another hat-trick to cap a wonderful performance from the Argentine forward who as scored 29 goals in the first half of his debut season for the Nerazzurri.

Carpi (Away) Lost 2-3 A surprise result to end the first half of the season saw Carpi rumble us 3-2. Kondogbia and Pjaca scoring our goals in the first half.

We lead the table by 9 points after a solid first half of the season which as given us a solid platform to mount a challenge to Juventus domination in the league. Juve are 12 points behind us but I know they will mount a challenge so we will be focusing on maintaining our lead when we restart in January.

Champions League 2017-2018

Chelsea (Home) Lost 0-1 Not the best of starts to our Champions League campaign, I went with the 4-3-3 formation with a top 3 of Vietto, Jovetic and Berardi. We created plenty of chances but failed to take them and went down to a Zouma header.

FC Steaua (Away) Won 3-2 We needed to take all 3 points from our visit to Romania and that’s what we did despite going down to 10 men after a Kondogbia red card. Our scorers on the night Vietto 2 and Xhaka.

Sporting Club (Away) Won 2-0 Our visit to Lisbon started off by Vietto picking up a knock inside 10 minutes, I replaced him with Berardi up top. Xhaka got another European goal to put us 1 up after 26 minutes and then Berardi doubled our lead just after the half hour mark. We held the lead in the 2nd half and left Lisbon with a vital 3 points.

Sporting Club (Home) Lost 0-1 Our worst performance of the season, Sporting deserved all 3 points and dented our chances of winning the group.

Chelsea (Away) Won 3-1 On the back of our worst game of the season we produced our best performance in Europe with a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge. All 3 goals came in the 2nd period from Neves and a Vietto brace.

FC Steaua (Home) Won 3-0 Neves, Perisic and Vietto scored the goals that put us in to the knockout round draw in Zurich.

Under 20’s (Development Squad) And Under 18’s

I have taken over the running of the Under 20’s for the first half of the season, it as given me the opportunity to get to know the squad. We have some promising talent coming through our system that should bear fruit for us over the next few years. Both the youth teams are top of the division which we hope will continue. Both youth teams are playing our new system.

I am not going to go in to depth with this tactic now because my next post will be about this tactic.

I have created this tactic to supplement our 4-3-3 system built on the philosophy of Marcelo Bielsa . One of Bielsa starting shapes at Athletic Club see below is what our new system is built on. Whilst Athletic Club were dynamic in breaking forward wit the ball they were also adept at holding on to the ball until an opening was made. I am not trying to recreate an identical tactic with identical roles however the shape of the tactic is very close with slightly different roles. Below you can see the roles I am using within the system.

“Bielsa’s teams are very aggressive. They don’t let you breathe,” Guardiola said. “Seven arrive in the penalty area, they lose the ball and 11 defend. Their games are all up and back, up and back, without stopping.” Guardiola

The Roles

Sweeper Keeper / Defend

Central Defender / Defend

Ball Playing Defender / Defend

Left Wing Back / Attack

Right Complete Wing Back / Attack

Half Back / Defend

Box To Box Midfielder / Support

Advanced Playmaker / Support

Left Inside Forward / Support

Right Inside Forward / Support

Complete Forward / Attack

The two full backs create width in the attacking phase which enable both our inside forwards to come in field and support the Complete Forward, My central midfield 3 are made up of a Holder / Runner / Playmaker, this is the engine room. The 2 Central Defenders are both very good in possession of the ball but I only play one of them as a Ball Playing Defender, in front of them is the Half Back who drops in between the centre backs in the defensive phase. We look to close down aggressively in hope of turning possession back to us quickly.

Training during the season is set to Balanced / Defensive Positioning

Individual Training is tailored to each player and the role they play with in the team.

So that’s the first half of the season wrapped up, we are about to enter the transfer window which may be interesting as a couple of players may leave due to lack of game time. There is a possibility of a player coming in who as played in this type of system for Pep Guardiola but I will not say who it is until the deal is done. The second half of the season should be entertaining has we are in a good position to go on and win the title. We have a big Champions League clash against Real Madrid to look forward too as well. I have also signed a contract extension until 2022. My next post will be based on my new system Verticalità. Thanks for reading Arriverderchi
