The Aristocrats Of Fredrikstad (2.0) #FM17

Welcome to my opening post of season 2 in Norway. Has you can see above the Fredrikstad Stadion is looking in good shape ahead of the new season. If you have been following The Aristocrats Of Fredrikstad you will already know that we finished our first campaign in 4th place in the league narrowly missing out on automatic promotion and then failing at the first hurdle in the promotion playoffs. During the close season I have been using my time to analyse our youth set up to make sure we can offer the best development program we can considering our status in the Football pyramid. Youth Development is a major player in the world of football and is very important for a club like ours at Fredrikstad if we are going to achieve our goals long term.

Youth Intake

We have had a very good intake of youth, I think the FM gods have been kind to us giving us some very good potential to work with.

Players Leaving

A number of first team squad players have gone through the exit door in Fredrikstad. Full back Magne Simonsen has moved to England after joining Millwall. Simonsen has been joined in England by Martin Thørnt Jensen who has joined Birmingham for 175k, I didn’t want to sell Jensen however he continually knocked my door down asking me to allow him to move club. Forward Ulrik Flo has joined AIK for 140k. Andreas Aalbu has moved to Lilleehammer for £600.  Other notable departure’s due to contracts expiring are goalkeeper Kristiansund and Defenders Sansara and club caparain Risholt.

Facilities Upgrade

I am pleased the board have upgraded our training facilities.

Pre-Season Results

We kicked pre-season off with a game against Olympique Lyon Reserves. The French club sent a fairly strong squad which produced a fantastic first half of football. I gave a run out to a mixture of first team squad players and youth team players. We got 2 second half goals via Viktor Gotesson and Patrik Karoliussen which gave us a 2-0 victory. We then had a visit from Jong Ajax who gave us a good test in a game that we ran out 2-0 winners again with two second half goals from Kjetil Ludvigsen and Patrik Karoliussen. A much sterner test next against Premier Division Tippeligaen Champions Strømsgodset. We gave an excellent account of ourselves in a 1-1 draw with Viktor Gotesson scoring our goal. We followed this up with another good performance by beating Danish side  Dalkurd 2-1 with both Patrik Karoliussen and Ludvig Begby getting on the scoresheet. We finish our pre-season with an 8-0 morale boosting victory over Fisa. Monir Benmoussa grabbed 5 goals along with Viktor Gotesson 2 and Ludvig Begby.

Players Promoted To First Team Squad

Promotion Odds

The bookmakers have got us down to finish 4th and reach the playoffs

Board Expectations

Well the board seem contempt at us reaching the playoffs and a 4th round Cup appearanc. Personally I would like us to push for automatic promotion.

That concludes my first season 2 post, I am already working on my next couple of post’s has I am aleady in to the season. I should have the next post released later this week so keep your eyes pealed for it.

The Aristocrats Of Fredrikstad (1.1) #FM17

img_20170207_113625Welcome to the latest update about my time at Fredrikstad Fotballklubb. In my last update we had managed to progress to the 3rd round of the Norwegian Cup and sat comfortably in 5th place in the OBOS-ligaen just 3 points off the guaranteed automatic promotion spot. What I can’t believe is why I have never managed in Scandinavia before. I am enjoying browsing around the Scandinavian Leagues and I am also enjoying the fact that financially we have to be very prudent. It still seems strange starting the season in April and finishing in October. The target for the board this season is to reach the playoffs however I would like to make a push for automatic promotion and then achieve stability in the top tier before pushing on to the next level of challenging at the top. After recruiting on the staff side of the club we now boast the best Scouting Network, Best Coaching set up and Medical team in the 2nd tier. With this foundation in place we can concentrate on getting it right on the pitch. Whilst on the subject of on the pitch I have been using an asymmetric 4-3-3 along with a 4-4-2 depending what players we have fit, however I switched to a 4-2-3-1  in the last month of the season. All 3 shapes have produced entertaining football along with getting the result. I am not going to go in to any detail about the tactics because I always build my tactics around the club and continually tweek roles and instructions along the way, so anybody wanting a plug and play tactic will be more than disappointed. In my short experience playing in the 2nd tier in Norway is that teams seem to pack the defence and midfield with numbers so you are at times looking for ways to break teams down which makes the in game experience all the better for me. Right so how have we been doing? I have broken the results down before and after the transfer window leading up to and including the final 2 months of the season.

June 16

We opened the month with a Norwegian Cup 3rd Round tie against Premier Division club Brann. I fielded a rotational side who performed fantastically in getting us a 2-1 win in the Fredrikstad Stadion. Kapidzic and N’Diaye getting the goals to put us in to the last 16. Four days later we were back in league action at home to Ranheim. We dominated the game and thanks to goals from Sansara, Dahlberg, Karoliussen and Westgaard we ran out 4-0 winners. A short month for games we end the month with a last 16 Norwegian Cup 4th round tie at home to top tier club Sarsborg which we lost 1-2 with Thørnt Jensen scoring our consolation goal.

July 16

With us knocked out of the cup we can now concentrate on our league form and a push for promotion. We get the month off to a good start thrashing Levanger 5-1 with young Swedish Forward Viktor Gotesson grabbing 4 goals after a performance behond his years, Flo scored our other goal in the satisfying victory. We came crashing back down to earth with our next game against league leaders Jerv who demolished us 0-4 in their own back yard. A devastating result that I have to take the blame for our away form as not been good and I failed to set us up to get a result, a steep learning curve for me and the chance to address it straight away with another away game against Konsvinger,  I changed our shape to a  5-3-2 / 3-5-2 formation which I had already used in the past. We got a 3-2 victory however we were far from convincing. We then entertained struggling Kfum Oslo and suffered a a 0-1 defeat that ended the month for us struggling for form.

August 16

After analysing our last few games I came to the conclusion that some of the older players in the squad were under performing and that it was time for me to put my faith in a few of our younger players and ring the changes for opening game of the month against Mjøndalen in the Fredrikstad Stadion. So in came wingers Begby and Benmoussa along with right full back Thornt Jensen. We played well and got a 2-2 draw with goals from Flo and Johansen in a game which we looked to have a better balance to our play. Our next test was an away trip to Asane were we came away with a 1-1 draw after a Dahlberg screamer. Keeping faith with younger players we beat Kristiansund 3-0 at home with goals from Karoliussen, Jensen and Dahlberg. We are looking better after freshening the first team up and an away trip to 2nd placed Sandnes Ulf produced a good display in a 0-0 draw which we were unlucky not to get all 3 points. With a new found confidence we beat Strømmen at home with goals from Karoliussen and Gotesson in a good 2-0 win. We end the month by completing a double over much fancied Sandefjord 2-0 courtesy of goals from Gotesson and Westgaard. So with 9 games to go we sit nicely in 3rd spot just 2 points off the automatic promotion spot.

Strømnes will hopefully add experience to our back line. Also coming in to our back line is Central Defender Sondre Johansen, the 21 year old former Stromgodset defender cost 60k. Another defender 21 year old Swedish full back Viktor Wernersson joined us for 170k from Syrianska. Asbjørn Helgeland also secured the signing of on loan Swedish Forward Viktor Gotesson for 79k which could rise to 200k with add ons . Last but not least 20 year old  versatile midfielder Martin Hole Andersen joined the club for 19.75k from Kvik Halden. We have made a small profit in the transfer window which can be invested in the search for some Norwegian youth that will we can develop for the future.

Total transfer fees paid 340.75k

Net Transfer Spend -367.25k

New Contract

I am pleased to announce that I have signed a new 2 year contract with the club which ends speculation of taking one of the vacant jobs at either Aston Villa or Preston North End.

The Switch To 4-2-3-1

With the introduction to the starting line up of some of our younger players I have made the switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

September 2016

On the back of going 6 games unbeaten last month we start September with 2 draws, the first a 0-0 draw at home to Ull /Kisa which incidentally is our 5th clean sheet on the bounce. Full back Viktor Wernersson scored our goal in the 1-1 draw at Bryne rounding off an impressive debut. We stay on the road and travel to struggling Hodd were we come away with all 3 points after Dahlberg and the ever improving Karoliussen get on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win. Another draw 1-1 our third of the month at Ranheim rounds the month off with Viktor Gotesson scoring his 13th goal of the season, which extends our unbeaten run to 10 games setting up a last month of the season with us in with a chance of promotion to the top tier.

October 2016

The last month of the season got off to a flyer with us beating bottom club Raufoss 3-0 thanks to a brace from Gotesson and a Karoliussen strike. The takes us in to 2nd place and an automatic promotion spot. We then welcome league leaders Jerv to the Fredrikstad Stadion were we get revenge for our defeat earlier in the season by hammering the Champions elect 5-1 with our best performance of the season, our goals come courtesy of Gotesson, Jensen, Benmoussa, Risholt and Simonsen. We now look favourites to join Jerv in gaining promotion to the top tier which looks more likely with a 3-1 win away at relegation threatened Levanger. Pedersen, Johansen and Benmoussa with the goals that extend our unbeaten run to 13 games. Our final home game of the regular season sees Konsvinger visit the Fredrikstad Stadion and end our unbeaten run has we lose 1-2 (Benmoussa) after a poor performance which sees us drop out of the automatic promotion spot and in to the playoff positions with one game to go.The final game of the season is at relegation threatened Kfum Oslo  with us knowing a win will see us promoted unless a 9 goal swing in favour of Sandnes Ulf happened. We get off to the best possible start when top scorer Viktor Gotesson gives us the lead in the first minute of the game with his 17th goal of the season. The nerves start to develop when Kfum Oslo grab an equaliser just before half time which see us go in at the break level. The second half turns out to be so frustrating has we look for the goal that takes us to the top tier. The goal never comes and the game ends 1-1 with us blowing our chance of automatic promotion. We have finished 4th in the table with other results going against us. We have to wait for the playoff draw to see who we face in a single leg Semi Final.

Play Off 1st Round Fredrikstad FK – Konsvinger

We finish the season and any hope of promotion with a poor performance in front of our own fans in the Fredrikstad Stadion losing 1-2 to Konsvinger who score a 80th minute goal to win the tie after we had got back in to the game with a 77th minute equaliser from Benmoussa after we had been forced to chase the game from the 13th minute.

Final Words

What can I say  I have had a really enjoyable first season in Norway that has seen us miss out on automatic promotion by 3 points and then lose the playoff Semi Final in our own back yard. I am now looking forward to next season which will see us regroup and attempt to gain promotion. At the start of the season the board wanted us to reach the playoffs which we did by 8 points in the end however we got so close to going up automatic to throw it away in the final 2 games. In reality we drew too many games too many games ten in total a third of our league games. We had a decent Cup run reaching the last 16 and off the pitch we built a good foundation which should see us prosper long term. We will say goodbye to a few players who are out of contract at the end of the year and a couple of other players have requested permission to speak to a couple of top tier club’s who are sniffing around them. We have not had a youth intake yet however by the time my next update is ready I should have more news on our intake. I have identified a few players who I think are in our reach that will replace any outgoing players during pre season. I have seen a lot of positives at Fredrikstad Fotballklubb and believe we will come back stronger next season with a younger, hungrier squad of players to mount a challenge at the top end of the table.

Thanks for taking the time to checkout this post and hope you will be back to read my next post which will be available over the next 7 days.

‘The Aristocrats Of Fredrikstad Story So Far’

2016 OBOS-ligaen 4th – Norwegian Cup 4th rd  (last 16)

The Aristocrats Of Fredrikstad (1.0) #FM17

c4vbm81wmaaiu1bWelcome to the latest update about my time at Fredrikstad FK in Norway. Since my introduction post I have been busy searching for the staff I feel alongside me can take this fantastic club in to the top tier and then sustain a position in the top tier for years to come. I have had the opportunity to set up a scouting network with 7 scouts and a cheif scout overlooking the scouting assignments and reporting directly back to me. Scandinavia is our top priority at this current time at the club so the network of scouts are combing Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Iceland building up a database of reports that hopefully will bear fruits for years to come. Apart from the first team squad we are lacking in depth in both our youth team squads so I am keen to get some young players in to the squads so we can start to develop them as soon as possible. The head of youth development will be key in bringing players in to the club and developing them. Unfortunately we are also in the middle of an injury crisis mainly to our front line so I have brought 2 players in to the club to boost the depth of the squad, the first is a season long loan deal for 20 year old Swedish Forward Viktor Gotesson from IF Elfsborg at a cost of £220 per week wages and no loan fee.

I then signed another Swedish Forward, the experienced 31 year old Mikael Dahlberg from Helsingborg IF for £14,000. Dahlberg will be on £1500 per week until 31.12.17.

I have also brought Finnish 29 year old attacking midfielder Eero Peltonen in to the club on a 5 month loan deal from HIFK. There is no loan fee and we will pay £170 per week wages for the duration of the loan.

Pre-Season Results

So how did we get on in Pre-Season? We started with a game against Sweden’s IFKGöteborg  and despite losing 0-1 we put in a very good performance and were unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Next up we visited third division club Tønsberg which provided me with a chance to give no fewer than 16 players a run out in a 4-2 win with our Swedish duo of Viktor Gotesson and Mikael Dahlberg both netting a brace. Next up a visit to Follo Fotballklubb and a game that we struggled to get going early on however goals from Viktor Gotesson, Sanel Kapidzic and a brace from Ulrik Flo ensured we ran out with a 4-1 win. We finished our Pre-Season with another 4-1 win, this time against Jevnaker Idrettsforenin with our goals coming courtesy of Viktor Gotesson 2, Ulrik Flo and Havard Asheim. So with Pre-Season over its difficult to work out what level we are at, with this being my first texperience in Scandinavia.

Director Of Football Appointed

I am pleased to announce that I have appointed a Director of Football at the club, the man I have chosen for the role is 50 year old Asbjørn Helgeland. He will be responsible for recruiting players for the first team squad however I will also be giving Helgeland transfer targets to chase. Helgeland has already recruited Danish Midfielder Mads Pedersen on a free transfer. Pedersen will earn £725 per week until December 2017.

We have brought 4 players in to the club for a total of £14,000.

April 2016

We kicked the season off with an away trip to Mjøndalen IF . We started the game on the front foot and raced in to an early lead when on loan Finnish Shadow Striker Eero Peltonen  neatly dispatched a through ball. Mjøndalen drew level in the second half. Both sides had a couple of half chances before the game fizzled out ending in a 1-1 draw. Our opening home game was against  Åsane Fotball, we dominated the game and led 1-0 at half time through a Viktor Gotesson strike. We continued to dominate in the 2nd half and scored 2 late goals from man of the match Patrik Karoliussen to give us a resounding 3-0 win. Our first big test of the season came next with an away trip to Kristiansund to play Kristiansund BK who are fancied to be pushing for promotion come the end of the season. In a fairly even game both sides failed to impose themselves on the game and a 1-1 draw was a fair result. On loan Forward Viktor Gotesson got our goal after another fine display from the 20 year old Swede playing in an Advanced Forward role. Next up the Norwegian Cup first round tie against  Lyn Toppfotball away. I decided to play a strong side to gain some momentum against the 3rd Division side who once reached the European Cup Winners Cup Quarter Finals. We came away with a good 3-1 win with goals from Midfielder Filip Johansen Westgaard, Shadow Striker Eero Peltonen and Advanced Forward Viktor Gotesson who netted his 3rd goal in 3 games. We then entertained  Sandnes Ulf  who are the bookmakers 2nd favourites to win the league. We ground out a 0-0 draw and to be honest we really didn’t play that well, however I feel I am getting to know the squad and feel positive for the future. The players that have come in on loan have settled well at the club.To end the month we visited Strømmen and carried our lack lustre performance from our last game and got punished losing 1-2 with our full back Magne Simonsen getting our consolation goal.

May 2016

img_20170207_123642We kicked the month of May off with an home game against league leaders and favourites for the title Sandefjord Fotball managed by Lars Bohinen. I was expecting a tough game so I called a team meeting to get the side motivated but I never expected the performance that was to follow, we played them off the park without doubt our best performance to date has we run out 5-1 winners to send a warning out to our rivals, our goals come courtesy of Viktor Gotesson 2, Eero Peltonen, Kristian Brix along with an own goal. Norwegian Cup 2nd round action followed away to Skeid Fotball were we won 4-1 with a rotated side, Moustapha N’Diaye netted a brace along with goals from both Sanel Kapidzic and captain Kristian Brix. Back to league action next and an away trip to struggling Ullensaker/Kisa, another 3 points right, wrong a shocking performance brings a 0-1 defeat. I question what happened and analyse the game, we just never turned up and deserved what we got. I make a couple of changes for our next game which is an home game against Idrettslaget Hødd, we start the game better but go in all square at the break 0-0. I keep the faith with my starting XI and one of the changes from our last game Swedish Forward Mikael Dahlberg wins the points with the only goal of the game in the 67th minute 1-0. Another home game followed against Bryne Fotballklubb and a Swedish double from Mikael Dahlberg and Viktor Gotesson gave us a 2-1 win which should probably have been more considering our dominance. Our last game of the month took us to Raufoss IL Fotball, we came away with a resounding 4-1 win with both front men Mikael Dahlberg and Ulrik Flo playing in a 4-4-2 system  netting a brace. Flo was returning from injury and will be pushing for a starting birth in the coming weeks.

My Bro Sprinkling His Magic In Germany With Schalke

New Fredrikstad Logo

c4vbm81wmaaiu1bI have had this logo created for my save / blog, here is @FMLogos_rocheyb description of the logo:

This was a fun one to do due to the rich history of the Norwegian town of Fredrikstad. The existing club’s badge is basically what you see in the triangular flag at the top of the Viking longship’s mast in this design, so I have retained that white-and-red halves motif in this new design. The yellow Rampant Bear and Castle on a red background is the Coat of Arms of Frederick II (1534-1588) and becomes the ship’s sail here. The many pointed star extending into the bottom half of the central roundel represents ‘Fredrikstad festning’; the oldest remaining fortress in the world. Here’s a cracking aerial photo of it: F.FK means Fredrikstad Fotballklubb. I don’t know that putting the single point there is a convention in Norwegian sport, but it makes sense to me, since ‘Fotballklubb’ is one word in Norwegian. That diagonal highlight was in the red background I used for the bottom section, so I have extended it into the top half to make the Coat of Arms look less superimposed. The use of the black and gold in the outer circle is as per my own ‘rocheyb’ logo, which TheWidePlaymaker identified as one he liked. Footballs are useful in these designs to punctuate text and provide start-finish points for the eye, particularly when the text is arranged in a circle like this. The club was formed in 1903 and I sampled the yellow from the bear and castle to provide a little more variety.

Thanks  to @FMLogos_rocheyb for creating the logo. you can check him out at : he is a top chap to talk to another credit to our community.

New blog Logo

wide-playmaker_400pxI also asked @FMLogos_rocheyb if he would design my new blog and twitter logo that incorporates my background, here is how @FMLogos_rocheyb describes how he created the logo:

Another attempt at these logos for a social media profile and website, with the benefit of a tighter brief from @totalfootball71. He specified the colour ways, provided the pit image to represent his own background (grandfather and father) and suggested the use of a Celtic Cross to represent his mother’s heritage. We agreed that the No.7 was the iconic shirt number of a wide playmaker so I have used a ‘7’ image that I found online as the basis for this design, which breaks up the space nicely. The footballer in the background is on about 80% opacity. There is a white outline around the outside of the roundel.

We hope to be competing in the top tier in the future, it looks a tight affair at the top.

Final Words

Thanks for taking the time to have a look at my first steps in Norway, I am pleased with our start that has us sitting in 5th place Just 5 points off the leaders after the first 3rd of the season. keep a lookout for my next post over the next week that will cover the 2nd third of the season.

The Aristocrats Of Fredrikstad #FM17

fredrikstad1Well the last few days have seen me searching for a new save and after 2 false starts I have found the club that will give me a better challenge, that club is Norwegian 2nd tier OBOS-ligaen club Fredrikstad Fotballklubb from the town of Fredrikstad.  With nine league championships and eleven Norwegian Cup wins, FFK is one of the most successful clubs in Norwegian football. The club was founded in 1903.After suffering relegation from the then first division in 1984, Fredrikstad spent 18 years outside the top flight, before returning to the Premier League in 2003 after two successive promotions.Fredrikstad stadion was FFK’s home ground between 1914 and 2006. However, its facilities where outdated and the club moved to a new stadium on the other side of river Glomma. Their new ground is located in a former shipyard, incorporating parts of the old buildings in the two sidestands. FFK draw great support from their area and the official supporter club’s name is Plankehaugen. More than 100 coaches filled with fans followed FFK to the cup final of 2006. The club’s supporters also includes an Ultras section, Superas Fredrikstad.

Fredrikstad Stadion

Having analysed the club I feel that there is a solid foundation to build for the future, the club has no debt which is a big bonus, a modern football stadium, good youth facilities and good training facilities which all in all the club is in good shape. The scouting network is non existent with just a Chief Scout at the club and no other scouts. The medical team is the best at this level and the coaching team is not bad but can be improved over time.

fredrikstad2 I am keen to make sure we have the right Head Of Youth Development coach because this will be a key position in the growth of the club. Overall I am looking forward to getting in to a save that will keep me focused on the job ahead.  The club have been in the 2nd tier since relegation in 2012 making this the 5th year on the bounce in the 2nd tier with 6th place being their best placing in that time.

So what is my vision for the club:

  • Finance – Keep control of the clubs finances by always working within the clubs budget.
  • Promotion – Take the club back to the Eliteserien which the top tier will be named from 2017.
  • Stabalise – Keep the club in the top tier.
  • Challenge – Challenge the top clubs in the top tier for Cup success  and eventually  become champions of Norway.
  • Europe – Take the club in to European Competion (Fredrikstad were the first Norwegian club to play in Europe in the 60-61 season were they defeated Ajax.
  • Style – Play an attacking brand of football without compromising the defence.
  • Youth – Produce an high number of players using our facilities for the first team.
  • Personal – Manage the Norwegian National team at a major tournament (Long Term Goal).

The Job

I have accepted an initial 1 year contract on £1.8k per week.

Fredrikstad FK Squad

Team Report

I feel we have enough quality in the squad to meet the boards expectations for the comingfredrikstad3 season. I will look to get the best out of the squad and give everybody a chance to nail a place down in the first XI. Pre season will see us work on team cohesion and match fitness before we take a balanced approach to training once the season is underway. Well that just about wraps this post up after a up and down last few days searching for the right club to manage I can honestly say I will give this club 100% commitment and already have made a connection with the club that has somehow eluded me recently. You will be hearing a lost more about the The Aristocrats Of Fredrikstad in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the messages and inspiration that have come from the FM Community you have helped me get a clear picture of what I want from an FM save.
