Florence And The Goal Machine : Introduction FM19

IMG_20180929_182032_20181007203922855

Welcome  to Florence the Italian city that is the home to ACF Fiorentina S.p.A and the club who I will be starting my FM19 save with after the Fred Pentland Challenge is now going to start after Christmas due to the working commitments of two of the participants, so whilst I am waiting to start the challenge with Villarreal I thought that I would drop anchor in Tuscany and see what I can achieve with the Viola. The club were formed in 1926 and have won the Serie A title on two occasions 1956 and 1969 some 50 years ago this coming season. The club were the first Italian Club to play in the European Cup Final in 1957 losing 0-2 to Real Madrid. Fiorentina did have some European success though when they beat Glasgow Rangers over two legs to lift the European Cup Winners Cup in 1961. The club are commonly known as The Viola (Purple) after the colour of their home shirts. They play their home games in the Stadio Artemio Franchi with a capacity of 43,147. The club were deemed bankrupt back in 2001-2002 season before being reestablished in August of 2002. The club are now owned by Diego Della Valle and are looking to better times after the implementation of a sound financial strategy

If any club can be symbolised by one player then Fiorentina can look no further than Gabriel Batistuta.  Diego Maradona once claimed that Gabriel Batistuta was the best striker that has ever graced the face of the earth. No greater praise can be heaped on the man known as “Batigol”, whose powerful play and deadly ability in the box made him feared throughout his career.

Today another Argentine forward is leading the line for the Viola, Giovanni Simeone also known as ‘El Cholito’ . The 23 year old son of Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone joined the club last season after speculation that he would join his father at Atlético from Genoa were he scored 12 goals in his debut season in Serie A before bettering his goal tally last season with 15 in the Viola shirt.

I plan to build my side around El Cholito  in the hope that he can become a club legend like Batigol himself.

The Manager

Well if you don’t know me I can tell you that I am very much influenced and schooled in the playing style of Italian Football and later a lover of the playing style of Ajax Amsterdam in that I like my teams to play in a wide 433 formation. I like to see wide players attacking the flanks getting crosses in to the box, cutting inside and running at defences whilst supporting a complete forward. I have been playing CM/FM since the very first release so I suppose you could say I am a veteran of the game. I enjoy reading about the game in general either a save game update or a tactical article. One of the many things I enjoy about the game is developing a tactical system that is close to a real life system as the game allows. I never look to build a game breaking system but each to their own. I am really looking forward to trying to create my system on FM19 and not only will I be taking the reigns at Fiorentina I will also be managing both the Under 20’s and Under 18’s side’s in full so I can get to know every player they comes through the door and mould them in to the player that I want using a development system that I have created called VORMS which I believe FM19 offers me the opportunity to get the system I desire working well with the new training overall.

Specificity

I would just like to give a big shoutout to Laura @wtforkgaming for creating my new manager emoji for the save, which I think is fantastic so thank you.

The Fiorentina Model

(Based On The Villarreal Project Taken From The Book Produced By Sandy Jamieson) I love this book and have read it several times since its release in 2011.

  • Manager Profile : Developing a profile of the right kind of manager who can deliver the exact kind of attractive successful football the leadership want for their club, and then recruiting to match that profile. (Hopefully Myself)
  • Quality Of Leadership : with vision, integrity, a clear sense of  where they are going and how they will get there. A leadership small enough and powerful enough to deliver its aims without internal opposition while generating great loyalty and affection to the many staff who help them implement their project.
  • A kick start Financial Strategy based on investing the presidents own money sufficiently well to create a club successful enough to generate sufficient income for continued success to be self sustaining without further external investment.
  • player recruitment strategy geared to produce a more talented squad of players at the start of every new season than the one at the start of the previous season. Linked to a transfer policy based on Buy Cheap, Sell Dear lines to generate sufficient income for the recruitment strategy to be self funding.
  • The development of a football complex as good if not better than can be found anywhere else in the World. From the base of that complex, Associazione Calcio Firenze Fiorentina Youth Sector  to create an academy that will eventually ensure a regular supply of footballers for the first team of the club.
  • modern stadium geared to the capacity of the community to fill it and equipped for European club competition at the highest level.
  • European success policy based on the simple premise the best way to hone the club’s competence in Europe is through regular participation in European club competitions. Otherwise known as ‘you may sneer at the Intertoto Cup but we will use it to make us a power in Europe.

The System (Purple Inside)

Our playing philosophy through all our squads will be:
  • 4-3-3 Wide Formation
  • Play out from the back
  • Play through the thirds
  • Creative and inventive in the final 3rd
  • Create goal scoring opportunities from wide areas
  • Counter attack
  • Press from the front
  • Defend as individuals and as a unit
  • Defend counter attacks
  • Work hard and show the right attitude to everything we do
  • Develop a basic understanding of Attacking & Defending
  • Learn to “Love the Game” – stay in love
  • High levels of technical repetition work
  • Players to enjoy playing in the positive environment created

We will play a 4-3-3 wide system with the following team instructions:

  • Play Out Of Defence
  • Shorter Passing
  • Play Much Wider
  • Work Ball In To Box

I want us to have a controlled approach we keep the ball and pass it with precision pass, pass and pass, possession but not for the sake of having possession I want good possession and a very high passing accuracy percentage creating good chances in front of goal with higher value shots or more to the point eliminate lower value shots.  This is fundamental in the way I want the club to play.

Numbering System

Squad numbers can be a real talking point with many of us having our own numbering systems and I am no different when issuing my squads thier specific shirt numbers. Many will not agree with my system but this is how I am doing it.

  • First Team Squad Issued Numbers 1 to 39 with the exception of number 13 which is retired in tribute to the late Davide Astori.  Shirt Numbers below issued based on my 4-3-3 wide system.
  • Goalkeepers Issued Shirt Numbers 1-12-91-92-93-94-95-96-97-98
  • Full Back Right Issued Shirt Numbers 2-22-32-42-52-62-72-82
  • Full Back Left Issued Shirt Numbers 3-23-33-43-53-63-73-83
  • Centre Backs Right Issued Shirt Numbers 5-15-25-35-45-55-65-75-85
  • Centre Backs Left Issued Shirt Numbers 6-16-26-36-46-56-66-76-86
  • Defensive Midfield Issued Shirt Numbers 4-14-24-34-44-54-64-74-84
  • Central Midfielder  Right Issued Shirt Numbers 10-20-30-40-50-60-70-80
  • Central Midfielder Left  Issued Shirt Numbers 8-18-28-38-48-58-68-78-88
  • Right Wingers Issued Shirt Numbers 7-17-27-37-47-57-67-77-87
  • Left Wingers Issued Shirt Numbers 11-21-31-41-51–61-71-81
  • Centre Forwards Issued Shirt Numbers 9-19-29-39-49-59-69-79-89-99

Stadio Artemio Franchi

Whilst the Artemio Franchi is a fantastic footballing cathedral the Fiorentina board would like a new modern stadium but have had several false starts in getting the project off the ground so we will see what we can achieve later on during the save.

Recruitment Policy

  • Buy Cheap Sell Dear
  • Self Funding
  • Identify and Buy in Undervalued Markets
  • Build an Italian core of players
  • Keep the clubs link with South America alive
  • Create Squad Depth Lists To Identify Key Areas For Recruitment
  • Scouting Network Will Scout Youth Football
  • I Will Target Youth Intake Days To Assign Scouts To Certain Nations For 3 Months From Intake Day

Player Development

The modern game is now a billionaire’s playground with transfer fees and players wages reaching incredible sums so it’s important for any club worth their salt to invest in Player Development that produces tomorrow’s stars that can go on and have a bright future with the club or move on generating a few Euro’s to further invest back in to the club. I will be using a system that I developed on FM18 that I call VORMS. It was actually called VORST on FM18 but Tutoring is now Mentoring and the new training will give me an opportunity to go deeper in to the training which is absolutely fantastic for me.

Like I mentioned above I will be taking control of both the Under 20’s and Under 18 squads and I am thinking that I will reduce the numbers of players in each squad to maximise game time for the players that remain at the club. During the first season I am pretty sure that the club will already have a good few players out on loan before I take over but I will look at the numbers and analyse the situation and make a decision to recall or leave certain players out on loan whilst I draw up a list of players who I will retain. I think it may be a few days before I press the continue button once the save is loaded.

    1. Thank You appreciate the comment. I have struggled somewhat over the last few years to stay interested in a save but feel like FM19 with the revamp of tactics / training as come at the right time and really got me hooked back in to the game.
