Welcome to the latest and Final Chapter of Florence And The Goal Machine. After ten seasons with La Viola the curtain comes down on one of my all time favourite FM saves and we went out in style by winning the Serie A title for the third time of the duration of the save. The Champions League eluded us yet again but overall I am more than satisfied with what we have achieved over the last 10 years.
- Serie A 🏆🏆🏆 2020-2021 / 2024-2025 / 2027-2028
- Europa League 🏆 2023-2024
- Coppa Italia 🏆🏆 2023-2024 / 2026-2027
- UEFA Super Cup 🏆2024-2025
- Supercoppa Italia 🏆🏆🏆2021/2022 / 2024-2025 / 2025-2026
A modest haul of silverware we have won 10 trophies in 10 seasons and come close on the following occasions coming runners up :
- Serie A 🥈🥈🥈🥈 2021-2022 / 2022-2023 / 2023/2024 / 2026_2027
- Europa League 🥈🥈 2022-2023 / 2025-2026
- Coppa Italia 🥈🥈🥈🥈wh 2019-2020 / 2021-2022 / 2022-2023 / 2025-2026
You can see above that we have lost in 6 finals during the 10 year period and finished runners up 4 times in Serie A meaning we came close to more honours a further 10 times and the reason that I think made this save more and more enjoyable. Yes you can talk about the victories but for me what made this save was picking ourselves up and going again.
Of course it’s nice to win and I would have loved to have brought old big ears (Champions League Trophy) back to Florence but we were just not good enough when it mattered and I just can’t help feeling that for whatever reason I didn’t manage the squad correctly going in to the big game weeks but that is history now and something that I can look to improve during FM20.
Sometimes you can be a victim of your own success and I feel that in previous FM releases I was somewhat of a victim of this by winning the lot early doors but with La Viola we have been successful but also struggled at times and that is what drove me on.
The Final Chapter 2027-2028
I had a good feeling about this season the squad felt like a title winning squad and to go out with the Serie A titlae was my aim and we started the season well both I the league and the Champions League with the stand out result being the 5-0 win against Manchester City that included a sparkling display from Patrick Cutrone who netted 4 times on the night.
In Serie A we had fantastic first half of the season winning 15 of our first 19 games with just 2 defeats at the hands of Juventus and Palermo. A 7 point lead over Juve at the end of December was pleasing to see and a good feeling was being felt around the club. Exceptionally good performances against our rivals were a joy to behold.
I was now focused on the Serie A title and despite going well in the Champions League which we have not won the title in Italy would be a good way to end the save. Wins I the league against Inter, Milan, Napoli, Roma and a high flying Torino in the Coppa Italia were outstanding in terms of attacking football at it’s best.

The Final Chapter
Crashing out of the Champions League to Liverpool in the 1st knockout round was disappointing but we were just not good enough over the 10 seasons to get our hands on old big ears. Defeat to Cagliari in the Coppa Italia Semi final stopped us reaching our 7th final which would have been nice but not to be.
With our focus now solely on the Serie A title we took our unbeaten run in the league to 26 games to win the title by 14 points which is the biggest margin for the duration of the save. Patrick Cutrone was a beast for us during the season netting 26 times and providing 10 assists.
To win the title for me in our last season nicely brings the curtain down on what I can honestly say is the best save that I have had for many years.

Overall Best XI
Not many surprises here however Domenico Berardi not making the Best XI is puzzling but Cortinovis edges him out. Cutrone with 169 goals is around 30 odd goals shy of Batistuta’s goal scoring record. Lafont with 432 games under my tenure is a fantastic achievement. My favourite player of FM19 Abdou Diakhate finished with 326 appearances and 54 goals. Diakhate was my big game player without a doubt repaying my faith in him since day 1 of the save.
Well it’s been a blast 3604 days, 537 games, 326 wins, 118 draws, 93 defeats, 1015 goals scored, 456 goals conceded, 3 league title’s and 7 cups won. It is now time to say goodbye to Florence. I targeted 10 seasons of the save at the beginning of FM19 and I am pleased to have reached that figure. I know some people have saves that go on for multiple seasons but for me balancing FM time with work and family 10 seasons is a nice number especially when I consider myself a slow FM player.
I have resigned from the club with immediate effect and the club have wasted no time in appointing a new manager in Unai Emery so I think it will be interesting to keep the save ticking over to see how la Viola fare over the next few years and to see if Cutrone stays at the club and breaks Batistuta’s goals record.
I will post the results on Twitter but for now the end of my era in Florenc is over.
The Next Challenge FM20
Papa’s next adventure will be on FM20 staying in Italy but this time a different challenge awaits when I take over U.S Triestina Calcio 1918, a club in the third tier (Serie C) of Italian Football. I know that there are a few folk in the FM World who don’t understand the attraction to Calcio and that is fine but for me there is nowhere in World football that delivers a cocktail quite like the Italian game.
The above graphic will be the style that I will use to head my blog posts on FM20. I am looking forward now to both a break from the game and also the build up to the new release.
Finally I would like to thank all who have both read and interacted with me over the course of FM19 and hope you will come back and read about my journey on FM20 with Triestina. There may be one or two guest posts coming up on the blog over the next few weeks before my FM20 introduction post so keep your eyes out for them but until next time
